Commissioned by Germany in 1940, U-96 served as a Type VIIC U-boat during the Battle of the Atlantic, completing numerous patrols and becoming one of the most recognised submarines of the Second World War.

Its story later inspired the acclaimed novel and film Das Boot, cementing U-96's place as perhaps the world's most famous submarine.
